DAGA 2017

Welcome to Kiel – Sailing City!

Kiel is famous as the capital of sailing – yet there are more connections to the sea: the GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel is one of the leading institutes in the field of marine science; and research on Hydro- and Ocean Acoustics is carried out at the Federal-Army Research Institute.

Early on, the development of acoustic techniques played an important role in Kiel – a prominent example is the acclaimed Kieler scientist Alexander Behm, who invented the echo sounder and co-operated with Hermann Anschütz, a friend of Albert Einstein, who invented the gyrocompass (in fact, Albert Einstein visited Anschütz several times in Kiel to go sailing). Therefore, it is hardly surprising that DAGA will take place in Kiel for a second time. Back in 1997, the Federal-Army Research Institute hosted DAGA with an emphasis on underwater sound. In the coming year of 2017, the chair for Digital Signal Processing and System Theory of the Faculty of Engineering at Kiel University invites you to Kiel. The main research focus is on Speech and Audio Processing, Medical Signal Processing, and Signal Processing for Underwater Applications.

The Faculty of Engineering was established 25 years ago, the university of Kiel celebrated recently its 350th anniversary, and the city itself was founded almost 800 years ago. The population size of Kiel has seen ups and downs: 150 years ago, Kiel had only 19.000 inhabitants, but until 1930, numbers increased rapidly up to 300.000. The year 1944 brought the number down to 195.000. Today, almost 250.000 citizens are living in the capital of Schleswig-Holstein. A large number of them are students – nearly 600 at the art academy, 7.000 at the Polytechnic, and 24.000 at Kiel University (CAU).

BCI Workshop 2014

The BCI workshop was held in Kiel on June 6th, 2014, for researchers interested in brain computer interfaces. A BCI translates biosignals from the brain into a signal readable by a computer, enabling the user to control devices by thoughts. For participants it was possible to test a BCI by spelling words or phrases by thoughts, which thereafter were displayed on the screen.

Prof. Dr. med. M. Siniatchkin (director of the Institute of Medical Psychology at Kiel, about neurofeedback at the neurology and psychiatry)

Dr.-Ing. M. Muthuraman (post-doctor at the Department of Neurology, about brain oscillation)

Dr. C. Guger (working on EEG, ECoG and spike based BCI project for g.tec, giving an introduction to the hard- and software and the possibility of live experiments for participants)

DSP Workshop 2011

The workshop on digital signal processing (DSP) for in-vehicle systems was held in Kiel, Germany, from September 4th to 7th, 2011.

The workshop series presents a unique opportunity for researchers working on different branches of in-vehicle signal processing to exchange and discuss cutting edge results. It also forms a communication platform between researchers, automotive manufacturers, government foundations and legislators for road safety on future in-vehicle technologies. The workshop featuree world-class experts on

  • road safety,
  • in-vehicle technologies, and
  • demos of state-of-the-art systems.

In addition to this theme, in 2011 the workshop was more extensive in participation from different realms such as: signal processing, control engineering, audio-video processing, bio-mechanics, human factors and transportation engineering.

ITU Focus Group Meeting 2011

The meeting on car communication (CarCom) was held in Kiel, Germany, on March 9th to 10th, 2011.

The objective of the focus group is to develop a new set of requirements and specifications to help advance the work of the ITU-T SG12, mainly questions 4/12 and 12/12 and to encourage the participation in this activity of members of other standards organisations involved in car and Telecommunications/ICT industries, including experts and individuals who may not be members of ITU. The main focus is on sub-system level requirements, in car communication and requirements/testing of frontends used for speech recognition in cars.

Jens Reermann Defended his Dissertation with Distinction

On Friday, 21st of June, Jens Reermann defended his research on signals processing for magnetoelectric sensor systems very successfully. After 90 minutes of talk and question time he finished his PhD with distinction. Congratulations, Jens, from the entire DSS team.
