Alexej Namenas - A New Guy in the Team

In June Alexej Namenas started in the DSS Team. He will work on real-time tracking algorithms for SONAR applications. Alexej has done both theses (Bachelor and Master) with us. The Bachelor thesis in audio processing (beamforming) and the Master thesis in the medical field (real-time electro- and magnetocardiography). In addition, he has intership erperience in SONAR processing.

We are pretty happy that Alexej has joined our team. Beside him also his twin brother (Anton) is in our team. Currently, we can easily differenciate both, since Alexej has done a lot of weight lifting recently. However, Anton joined the gym now as well ...

Second Part of Special Issue on Smart Vehicle Technologies Appeared

Recently the second part of the special issue on "Smart Vehicle Technologies" appeared in the IEEE Signal Processing Magazine. The issue was jointly edited by John H.L. Hansen, Kazuya Takeda, Sanjeev M. Naik, Mohan M. Trivedi, Gerhard Schmidt, Yingying (Jennifer) Chen, and Wade Trappe.

We were pretty happy to convince a large group of authors to write very interesting contributions. Since the contributions were too much for a single issue, the publishers agreed to do a double issue. Our introduction for the special issue can be found here.

PhD Number 5 in April 2017

As mentioned earlier, the month April was very "productive" in terms of PhD outcome for the DSS team. Tim Claussen defended his research on April, 28th successfully. Now we have five new doctors this month.

Tim Claussen has investigated and implemented SONAR systems with special focus on real-time MIMO approaches. Beside theoretical investigations he also implemented all approaches in our real-time system. Beamforming, adaptive Doppler analysis and cognitive approaches were among the various contributions that he worked on.

PhD Number 3 and 4 in April 2017

This April is very "productive" in terms of "PhD generation". On April 20th and 20st we had another two PhD defenses within the DSS team. First Vasudev Kandade Rajan defended successfully his research on (speech) signal processing for microphones that are integrated in seat belts. The very next day Jochen Withopf gave his "PhD talk" on in-car communication systems - also very successful.

Vasudev Kandade Rajan has investigated and implemented a multi-channel (for a multitude of loudspeakers, phone channels, and microphones) hands-free system. Special emphasis was put on the support of so-called belt microphones (sensors that are integrated in the security belts of cars). The project was done in close cooperation with the company "paragon". Vasu, congratulations from all of us!

Jochen Withopf has done research on so-called in-car communication systems, both in terms of theoretical analyses and practical implementations in our research cars. Jochen has worked in close cooperation with the Daimler. Also for you Jochen, congratulation from the entire DSS team.

Special thanks go to Prof. Dr. Tim Fingscheidt and Prof. Dr. Rainer Martin for being the second reviewers of the two PhD defenses.

Finally we should mention that April is not yet over. Let's see what the remaining week of April will bring.

Two more DSS Doctors

This week - to be precise on Monday, 03.04.2017, and Thursday 06.04.2017 - we had two PhD defenses in our group.

Anne has done research in the last years on automatic evaluation systems for in-car communication systems. On Monday, she gave an excellent talk about her research and was able to answer all questions during her defense. Of course now: Gratulation to Dr.-Ing. Anne Theiß and thanks to the second reviewer, Prof. Möller from TU Berlin, as well as to the third questioner Prof. Klinkenbusch and to Prof. McCord for guiding the defense.

Kolja was investigating SONAR systems over the last years with special focus on tracking issues in cooperation with the FWG. On Thursday, he also gave an excellent talk about his research and defended his work successfully. Congratulations to Dr.-Ing. Kolja Pikora and thanks to PD Dr. Koch from Wachtberg for beeing the second reviewer as well as to Prof. Höft for being the third questioner and to Prof. Kienle for guiding the defense.
